The little fishing hole was rimmed with dead turtles, a causation of oil factory leaching.Robert the hobby fisherman has bounced between oil, sugar, rubber, and grain refineries his whole adult life. All of them are located within forty miles of each other. He takes after his father who still drives a fork lift in the Shell oil refinery, even after having a heart attack and undergoing a quadruple bypass surgery. Robert points to a cement and metal city just half a mile from the fishing hole; a mini replica of the Matrix’s carbon fantasy future. He and his brother Chris have fished here since they were kids. Still, they forgot their licenses. As we begin to interview them, a fish and wildlife officer pulls up. They get away with a warning and sigh relief as the wiry ranger drives away.

Daniel Tso, a local Navajo man, thinks to himself about the dangers that oil is placing on local heritage and spiritual sites such as Chaco Canyon. We were on what Daniel calls his “unofficial fracking tour of the Navajo reservation.” Nearby is Chaco Canyon, a world heritage site where massive buildings of the ancestral Pueblo peoples still stand. While Chaco Canyon and its ruins are protected from development, as is a 10-mile buffer around the park, surrounding areas are not. Chaco is the core of a much larger ancestral network of Native Americans that extended for hundreds of miles in the central San Juan Basin, and was used as a main trading hub from about 900 to 1300 A.D.

The Flambeaux, the original Mardi Gras lights, were needed for revelers to see the Carnival parades at night. They carried wooden rudimentary torches and lit pine tar rags to light the way. Flambeaux: It’s a Mardi Gras tradition that has become revered as an art form today, having blossomed well beyond the practical purpose it first served. People still hand them tips as they walk by. Originally, the flambeaux carried wooden rudimentary torches, which were staves wrapped with lit pine-tar rags. That evolved to oil-burning lanterns mounted on metal trays and long poles to prevent the flames from burning the carriers.
